Commissioned Dog Portrait Paintings

Labrador Retriever and Brittany Spaniel Dog Portrait
Buddies Yellow Labrador Retriever and Brittany Spaniel Dog Portrait
Sometimes you can get that perfect photo of your dog but more often you try and fail. Or what if your dog has passed away and all you have are fuzzy not so great photos to remember him or her by? Maybe you want to have multiple pets in one picture and can't get them all to hold still? That's where I come in as an artist. I can work from "less than stellar" photos and use separate photos of pets as reference and combine them into a single painting. I can even add your favorite background to round out the portrait.

The herding breeds of dogs make handsome portraits with their long flowing fur and happy faces. I have included portraits of one of my client's three Belgian Tervurens to show how similarly colored dogs of the same breed still have entirely individual faces. The first dog on the left was my Keesha girl. There were never enough frisbees for her to catch.

The hounds encompass a huge variety of shapes, sizes and abilities. From the tall and elegant sight hounds like afghan hounds and greyhounds to the low and stumpy dachshunds and basset hounds that are led along by their noses, there is a type for everyone. I happen to be partial to dachshunds...the red smooth dachshund on the far left and far right are both portraits of my Cherrydachs Red Cedar (You can see photos of her beautiful parents here).

The poor non-sporting breeds. In no way are they not a lively and "sporting" lot. Someone just couldn't think what group to put them in so lumped them together in this group! Short hair, long hair, curly hair, tall, short; take your pick. They include some of the most popular of pets out there. I find the breeds with the tight curly coats are the most difficult to paint and those with the long flowing fur the easiest.

Labs and Golden Retrievers continue to be among the most popular dogs registered in the United States.  Dogs from these breeds are wonderful hunters and most are equally wonderful family dogs. It is no wonder that they are so popular. Being so numerous, the vast majority of the portraits I have done are from this group.

Undoubtedly Labrador Retrievers are my most requested commissions. It only makes sense since they are far and away the most popular of all dog breeds. This is just a smattering of those I've done, but I wanted to show them to highlight just how individual a dog's face is. Why buy a print of a generic lab when you can have a commissioned portrait of your OWN lab?

Golden Retrievers are the second most popular dog in America and I do a fair number of them as well. Another wonderful family dog that is seldom seen without carrying something in its mouth.

Terriers tend to be a feisty lot. They include some very popular breeds like the West Highland White Terriers, Schnauzers and Yorkshire Terriers. I have what seems to be possibly a terrier crossed with a Corgi among other things. I haven't yet done a portrait of her, but you can see Poppy's photo here.

The Working Breeds are another highly varied group. They can used as guardians, sled dogs, drug detecting dogs and many other purposes to help their humans. Many are powerful and are best handled by experienced dog owners.

Last but certainly not least are the Toy Dog Breeds. Small in size but huge in personality, these breeds fill many homes with joy and love along with a whole lot of fun.
